1) We study a basic science question (the mechanisms of axons and glia interaction after injury) that is applicable to many different diseases and conditions. Only a handful of laboratories in the world investigate this topic. We won’t make you choose between neurons and glia, we promise. 2) As such, if you are interested in applying to fellowships/grants of your own, our projects are very versatile. 3) On the other hand you are not forced to apply for your own funding if you do not want to. This is a condition often put on postdocs in labs at other universities: you need to get your own funding within 2 years from joining. We have enough funding to cover your whole postdoc. 4) You won’t be poor. In Columbus, Ohio, a student stipend/postdoc salary will afford you luxury compared to cities on the coast. If you have a family, the school system in the suburban area is top notch. Columbus is a very safe city, and the climate is mild. 5) You will be joining a lab with 2 young PIs that are often at the bench and will supervise you directly. There is no need to schedule meetings a month away to talk about science, we will be in the lab with you often. 6) Because we work in the lab we will never complain that it takes too long for you to finish an experiment. We KNOW some protocols take 5 days from start to finish! 7) We are young, but not inexperienced. Check out our publication record. For example, with our most Nature Neuroscience paper we shifted the focus of axon degeneration away from the neuron, and since we published that paper, many more labs around the word started to think about the contribution of glia and metabolism after nerve injury. 8) We can teach a big variety of techniques. Many labs are specialized in less than 5 techniques. We go far beyond that (see the figure listing some of the techniques we use). Join us at Ohio State University, Wexner Medical Center.
